Is A Cheaper Web Server Better

I don’t know if it makes sense to go for a cheaper server if the company who is supplying has no reasonable support system. I guess newer hosting companies offer cheaper services as a ‘loss leader’ to bring on board new clients that potentially need other value added services.

Two companies that seem to shine out of the crowd are Hostgator and 1and1 who have both been around for a long time and seem to have good reputation for reliable and low cost hosting.

It would certainly be a good excercise to look at the performance figures and maybe the testimonials of the company to are thinking of dealing woth to give you a feel of what to expect

Web Server Technology

Web Server Technology

Various Types of Web Hosting Technologies
By Dave Wheeler

Several technologies are used in web hosting. Each technology has its own advantages as well as limitations. As such, web developers normally use a combination of at least a few technologies to optimize the web hosting effectiveness. Some of the most common and frequently used technologies are presented here briefly.

The broad classification of web hosting technologies consists of Windows Hosting for computers that use Microsoft Windows as their operating system, UNIX Hosting for web services that use the UNIX operating system, and Linux Hosting for computers having the Linux operating system. Apart from these basic classifications, the actual technologies used for web hosting are ASP, PHP, CGI, JSP, Cold Fusion, Adobe Dreamweaver, etc.

ASP

ASP is one of the most common web hosting technologies. This had been developed by Microsoft as a server-side technology for scripting purposes. ASP helps the developer to create dynamic web pages by incorporating script codes inside the HTML pages. These codes are executed by the remote web server before the web page is submitted to the browser. The ASP technology uses both VBScript and JavaScript for generating the codes. ASP is presented by Microsoft as a standard component in all the Windows versions and can be easily activated on all the computers that run on the Windows operating system.

PHP

PHP is a free, efficient, and widely used alternative to Microsoft’s ASP. PHP had been designed as a perfect tool for web development and it is capable of getting directly embedded into the standard HTML codes. The syntax of PHP is quite similar to other technologies such as Perl and C. A combination of PHP and Apache are generally used on various types of operating systems. PHP supports ISAPI and is used with IIS of Microsoft on Windows operating system. The major advantage of PHP is that it can support different types of databases like MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Solid, Generic ODBC, and PostgreSQL.

JSP

JSP had been developed by Sun Microsystems as a server-side technology and is similar to ASP in web hosting functions. JSP uses Java codes incorporated in the HTML pages for creating dynamic web pages. Due to the use of Java in JSP, this technology is not limited to any specific platform and can be applied on all types of servers and operating systems.

Other web hosting technologies for the development of dynamic web pages are

  • Cold Fusion developed by Adobe Systems as a scripting language on the server side to create dynamic web pages
  • Chili!Soft ASP that is capable of running on UNIX and certain other platforms
  • Microsoft FrontPage that helps even persons without a sound knowledge of web development to host their website easily, if they have Windows operating systems
  • Adobe Dreamweaver developed by Adobe Systems to compete with Microsoft FrontPage. This tool supports other web technologies like JavaScript, CSS, Cold Fusion, PHP, ASP.NET, and JavaServer Pages. This tool has Windows and Mac versions.

Apart from the use of one or more of the above technological tools for web hosting, you might also need a secure server to transmit data in an encrypted format to prevent unauthorized access by other parties. Bank account, credit card, and other similar transactions and their related data need such secure server web hosting facilities for protection of precious data from being stolen and misused.

Web Server Host

Web Server Host

Picking the Right Provider For an Efficient Managed Server Hosting
By Karl Rechcheski
Platinum Quality Author

The popularity of the internet cannot be denied. Since the public gained access to the internet, the world has become a smaller place. Businesses, big or small, have found an ideal marketplace that could reach to every household in the globe. Online sellers and retailers have found a new lease on life that provides an adequate selling venue that is cheap to maintain and convenient as well. The internet has paved the way for worldwide advertising that could be accessed at the click of a mouse. For small businesses whose websites used to be hosted on shared servers, a better option of managed server hosting services are available for better efficiency and complete hands free management of all web server responsibilities.

Managed server hosting of dedicated servers is an internet hosting service that allocates a whole server to a single client that is in need of a reliable web server and is more flexible than the usual shared hosting service, without all the hassle that usually comes with it.

An internet website that encounters high volume traffic everyday should consider looking for dedicated servers for complete freedom in handling and managing them. Dedicated servers can either be managed or unmanaged. The option of an unmanaged server gives the client complete control on what operating systems, programs and hardware should be used to run their web servers. Websites that encounter minimal traffic volume would do well with a shared server as subscribing to a dedicated server would be costly and requires more administrative support to properly operate.

Think of it as a catering service for a particular event. The client could either choose to purchase food service only or go for everything the caterer has to offer such as party favors, venue and decorations. Managed server hosting is similar to the aspects of a full service catering. The client will look for a managed host to provide the kind of service that will work well for his company/establishment. Unmanaged server hosting gives the client complete control over server options, hardware to use and other aspects needed to run as web host.

Managed server hosting usually comes in two planned packages and could either be per-item basis or according to the dedicated servers’ pre-determined plan. The former offers the client a wide array of options to choose what service to use and exclude any unnecessary service that may not be applicable for their needs. The latter comes with a dedicated server and other hosting features pre determined by a fixed monthly rate.

When looking for a managed host, read client reviews about the particular host and see if the service is consistent with the highest marks. Do not hesitate to email the host and ask about the particular service that you need. A quick response from the host is usually a good indication of reliability and efficiency of service.

A fixed monthly rate is preferred over expensive annual plans and the ability to pay a managed host in monthly terms will offer flexibility when it comes to budget constraints.

Managed server hosting is perfect for businesses that want to maintain a strong presence online without the need for expensive and dedicated administrative in-house support teams in the company.

Cheap Web Server

Cheap Web Server

Choosing web hosting is not an easy task. The competition is huge, comparison is difficult and hosting plans seem to be cheap. But the price should not be the main objective. Hosting is needed to reliably host web pages. Web pages are stored on the web server which is a dedicated computer for storing and serving pages. Once you upload pages to the web server you expect that all the files will remain there and the website will be available without any interruption.

However, practice shows that computers fail. If a web server fails all the websites that are served from it are not accessible. Therefore, every hosting company has some kind of maintenance and support to deal with such cases. This is the point where hosting offers start to differ significantly. Unfortunately, from the sales page you will not be able to figure out exactly how responsive the support is. Most companies offer 99.9% up time. But this does not answer all questions regarding reliability. A common problem is that the server works but your website is still inaccessible. In such cases nobody except you will inform the hosting company about the problem. If the company offering hosting is responsive and cares for their customers the reported problem will be analyzed in a matter of minutes. Depending on the cause of the problem they will offer you help to bring the website online as soon as possible.

Reliability and good support are the first things you should look for. If your website will be offline too many times you will loose visitors and consequently any income that may come from the website. In some cases it will be your fault for something not working properly. Good internet company with skilled personnel will help you to locate the problem and will advise on possible solutions.

The following advices can help you to select the appropriate hosting for your websites.

Free Web Hosting

Avoid them. If you can not afford few dollars per month for a professional service then it doesn’t make sense to put any effort into the website. The offer is attractive, but there are usually some strict terms that define additional conditions in order to have free hosting.

Unlimited Everything

Many hosting offers include unlimited number of domains, unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, etc. In general, this is a good offer because in many cases you will need hosting for more than just one domain or website. But you have to understand what unlimited means. The web server is a physical machine with limitations and it is used to host few hundred websites. You will be able to host many domains, just don’t expect that you will be able to occupy all the resources of the server.

One of the popular and reliable hosting companies with good reputation and excellent support is Hostgator. It offers cheap and affordable plans for every taste. Hostgator is one of the world’s top 10 web hosting companies. The author hosts all his websites at Hostgator because of excellent service and fantastic support.

When everything works fine there are no major differences between companies. But when the website is inaccessible it is pretty easy to draw a line between good and average hosting. You don’t have to wait for your website to be offline–take some time, read reviews and choose proven and reliable company.
